지난 몇 해 여행하면서 나는 우리 인간이 얼마나 과거 속에 사는지를 보아 왔다. 무언가가 모습을 드러내는 순간 그것은 곧 과거가 된다는 점을 생각하면, 과거는 늘 우리 둘레에 있다. 우리의 주변, 집, 환경, 건축, 물건은 모두 과거의 구성물이다. 우리는 우리 시대의 일부, 우리 집단 의식의 일부, 우리가 사는 동안 만들어진 것들과 함께 살아야 한다. 물론 우리 둘레의 모든 것을 우리 시대에 맞거나 우리 시대에 구상된 것으로 둘 선택권이나 통제력은 없다. 그러나 우리가 통제할 수 있는 것만큼은 우리가 살고 있는 시대를 비추고 현재를 말해야 한다. 현재가 우리가 가진 전부이며, 현재에 둘러싸일수록 우리는 자기 존재와 참여를 더 잘 알아차린다.
