두려움과 그 짝인 고통은, 제대로 쓰이기만 한다면 사람과 동물이 지닌 가장 쓸모 있는 것 둘이다. 불이 탈 때 아프지 않다면 아이들은 손이 다 타 없어질 때까지 불을 가지고 놀 것이다. 마찬가지로 고통은 있는데 두려움이 없다면, 아이는 자기를 태운 불에서 떨어지라고 두려움이 일러 주지 않으므로 몇 번이고 되풀이해 데일 것이다. 정말로 두려움이 없는 군인은 — 그런 이가 실제로 있다 — 좋은 군인이 아니다. 곧 죽기 때문이고, 죽은 군인은 군대에 쓸모가 없다. 그러므로 두려움과 고통은 그것이 없으면 사람과 동물이 곧 사라져 버릴지도 모를 두 파수꾼이다.
